GRADUATE SEMINAR: AMERICAN ART (4 units)
Fridays, 2-5
425 Doe, CCN: 05670
Margaretta Lovell |
This seminar seeks to explore museums in the United States from the perspectives of history, theory, and practice. Our focus will be on art and anthropological museums but we will also consider natural history, history, and manuscript/rare book collections. The intention is to analyze the institutions that collect, keep, conserve, exhibit, and sometimes study the objects that form the basis of much academic research and teaching. Classroom discussions will be supplemented by interviews with curators, conservators, and directors. We will also take an extended field trip to Los Angeles in February where we will visit / study several institutions and attend the College Art Association meeting (where 5 sessions focus on museum history , social context, design, and ethics). Prospective students are encouraged to email mmlovell@berkeley.edu before January 15.
