GRADUATE SEMINAR: 19TH CENTURY ART (4 units)

Adapting the title of the 2007-8 exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, this seminar will examine the significance of repetition in the art of 19th-century France. We will focus on two artists at either end of the century whose works are very unlike and idiosyncratic yet also exemplary of the preoccupations of their times. Besides reading the most interesting scholarship on repetition and the series, we will also consider early academic practices such as copying, mechanical reproduction including printmaking and Japonisme as well as photography, and also the rise of the dealer system. I have chosen only two artists as our case studies in order that we may attend closely to their works; I want this seminar, while theoretical, to entail intensive looking. Students can write their seminar papers on subjects outside these geographical and temporal parameters. NOTE: Participants should read Thomas Crow’s Emulation and my book Extremities prior to our first meeting in order to set the stage for our immediate immersion in the art of Ingres and its relationship to late 18th- and early 19th-century French painting.
