UG SEMINAR: LATIN AMERICAN ART (4 units)
Fridays, 9-12
425 Doe, CCN: 05583
Todd Olson |
This course will trace the impact of European conquest on the visual cultures of Latin America. The seminar will study the migration of Spanish images, forms and technologies to the New World. Participants will also examine the negotiation of these imports and the persistence of indigenous visual cultures in codices, maps, architecture, prints, visual spectacles and painting. Innovative visual objects and genres – from Conquest of Mexico screen paintings to racial typologies in Casta paintings – reveal emergent forms of scientific, religious and political representation in post-conquest societies.
