UG SEMINAR: THE ILLUSTRATED BOOK, FROM ARISTOTLE TO A.D. 1000
(4 units)

Fridays, 1:30-4:30
308B Doe Library , CCN: 05577
David Wright

Aristotle was the first to use illustrations (in his scientific writing); none of these survive, but
there are splendid examples in this tradition from the sixth through the tenth century. Narrative
illustration, both Christian and secular, started later, but flourished from the fourth through the
tenth century: Monks in Ireland and England developed a tradition of elaborate decoration in the
seventh century, and this expanded in Carolingian and Ottonian times. We will study the best
examples, mostly from facsimiles in the Bancroft Library.
Interested students are asked to sign for an appointment with Mr. Wright at his office (432 Doe
Library) beginning Wednesday, 29 October (numerous possible hours will be posted).

Admission is by interview and mutual agreement. Special arrangements can be made for graduate students.
