Janet Broughton earned her B.A. degree from UC Davis and her Ph.D. from Princeton University. After teaching for three years at Harvard University, she joined Berkeley's philosophy department in 1979.
Her teaching and scholarship focus on the philosophy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Broughton is the author of Descartes's Method of Doubt and is currently working on the philosophy of David Hume.
